I love this story: "Today, I went to the doctor. For the past year, my stomach would get upset every time I ate. Attempting to ease the pain, I would always eat a piece of bread. My doctor told me I have Celiac disease, which means I'm allergic to gluten. I'm allergic to bread." (FML) Of course I'm not happy about the person's pain. That's weird. What I like about it is that they're so human. The story sounds like they were kind of a dolt. (oh noes dictionary time) What they did was ordinary. I have probably 120 hours or so of helping people. I can tell you that after having probably well over a 1000 conversations about serious problems- the "bread thing" is exactly what people do. Something happens, they feel bad, they do something to cope (even the wrong thing) and, even though it doesn't work, they keep doing it!! And not just for a year. For some it's literally HALF of their life. For a few, even longer. I think I'm done with the online help thing that I do. I rarely help people. When I do they just eat more bread. It's much easier in person. The last person I helped wasn't even aware I was specifically bridging the gap between neural connections that would collapse their problem state. And then it seemed like they never really had a problem. I really need to start charging for this. |
